I could honestly care less about the filter here, but it's here, and we have to deal with it.
whoa whoa whoa... so... let me get this straight. you should be able to swear all you want on the game. but the 'elite' site supporting the game needs a filter?

as much as there is a filter, we all know this system has faults. it doesnt pick up on every single swear word, and you can replace letters and skip letters blah blah blah. so i totally agree with the no swearing in alliance chat full stop. you cant just say turn on the filter then let people go nuts with swearing and using words that the filter doesnt pick up on.

in my alliance we dont allow swearing in alliance chat, but guild chat is fair game. because we know all the guild members and know their ages etc. but i dont know how old everyone is in the alliance.

i dont understand why this is such a hard concept to understand.

i would somewhat sympathize with people overreacting about swearing, but since im an officer from Death By[Emo], which hapens to be in the same alliance, i would like to point out that swearing is not allowed in alliance chat.
thats a basic rule and while you may not have known about it, officers and members from other guilds are quick to explain it to u.
that by no means would have resulted in a kick from the guild u were in, but u turned something as simple as a rule violation into something much bigger.
The mature thing to do would have been to accept and respect that this is the rule of the alliance chat.
This alliance has that rule bc many of us do not want our alliance chat spammed with caps and swearing.
I have no problems with swearing in guild chat or team chat, but i still keep it out of alliance because of respect for the alliance rules.
If u wish to have a guild in which swearing in alliance chat is ok then as some people have previously pointed out, you have the ability to make any type of guild u want
But please respect the rules of whichever guild or alliance u join

I think there is a point that is missing with all the rants and morality tossing. Point is Kain deliberately is guild hopping to instigate odd situations. In the current world, that is commonly referred to as harrassment. That isn't any different from players trying to sabatoge alliances by "infiltrating" and causing drama, or forum bashers or even VENT (or TS) spammers that get into your voice server and spam noise. What about all the other players out there in chat and on VENT who want a fun peaceful game. You don't think they work all day and want to relax when they get home? He should be proud of himself, finding a new way to prowl the internet in search of his 10 minutes of fame. And I wonder if you are really affiliated with GWG. Hmmmm maybe someone should go out and look for "To Catch A Bad Player". Shouldn't be too hard! All in all, I don't think that players should go around trying to make obscure points or cause problems. You like to swear, no problem, go find a guild that swears 24/7. You want a religious experience, go find a similar minded guild. You don't play well with other people, go to PvX and get your solo and hero builds. If a guild has a simple rule about swearing, flaming, or even begging for money constantly, then leave. Don't bait the hook and hang around until you get kicked, or get out of your boat.

I disagree with this because often times those who swear in Guild Wars generally have their filter turned off, so ultimately they wouldn't be changing their spelling to avoid the filter. If you drop the f bomb here, it turns into something completely different and not relevant (GO RED ENGINE), and is uniform for everyone.

I think alliance rules should be respected if you choose to join and stay. I've been in alliances with more absurd rules than no swearing, so it doesn't really shock me that people actually care to implement a no swearing rule, despite the filter.

Yes the end of all whining about swearing is, the filter. Insulting people, going on insane rants, or purposely avoiding the filter, yes, you might wanna think about telling them to calm down. But people who complain about the use of 'course' language in an online game with a filter are idiots.

I remember RF Onlines swear filter... jesus that was the most retarded thing i've ever seen. It couldn't be turned off and to stop people 'bypassing' it it blocked your entire message if you put the the letters in a certain order. You type something like 'damn things hitting me' and it blocked it for the use of sh*t.

This is an internet game. If you seriously get offended by curse words, go see a psychiatrist (spell check).......

Everyone should read this post. If you still think swearing is an issue, turn on the filter. If, you don't have children, and are offended by language. Here's a reality check.

You are playing a video game, and are concerned about language. Find a better hobby. TURN ON THE DAMN FILTER ALREADY.
Where is it said when you play video games swearing might be a prerequisite? My personal opinion is people who have to type swears in a game are just looking for attention very different than the spoken word. This whole thread seems like a repeat of a thread a few weeks ago.

I say old chap, swearing is just not cricket. One doesn't need to devolve into vulgarities to express oneself.

Pretty sure you are being sarcastic, but what you say is the truth.

It really isn't about getting offended, but rather that the alliance had a rule against swearing in the chat
It doesnt mean that members of the alliance do not use it, but rather that they do not want alliance chat spammed with swearing
I dont understand why alliances that do not want swearing in alliance chat are portrayed as overreacting or being offended by it
The alliance wants to retain a certain class about themselves instead of having alliance chat being a swear fest
I do not see y it is so hard to respect a simple rule, which is not an overreaction to swearing

This is what i don't get.

You complain about swearing on a game, while theres a filter.

But do you complain to every person you hear swear in real life?

Also, if we go back a few hundred years, some swears had been part of the English language. It was just accepted.

Its part of our language. Just because you don't like a word in a language, do you have to have rules against saying them?

I don't get it.

tl/dr

The only reason to swear in chat is to call attention to yourself. Stop please.

Unless of course you don't have the vocabulary to speak without cursing...

MetalMan, the alliance simply does not want to have swearing in alliance chat
And in real life, people have the option to not be around people who swear alot
And not all words are approriate to be said
Now the n word has been around for a long time, but does that mean it is acceptable to walk up to an african american and call him that?
I know many african americans who would say it is not despite rap and other things using this word
it comes down to have some self control and respect, which is part of y the alliance has these rules

I swear like a sailor. It doesn't make me any less intelligent than the next person or any sort of attention seeker.

I obviously know my limits and understand there is a time and a place where it is appropriate. GW, IMO, is a place suitable to swear.

So... Anything going to be done about those screenshots? I can still make out 3 names in them apart from Kain.

I think i have to stop you there. Theres a big difference between Racism and Swearing. Don't try and lump the 2 together in the same boat when they're MILES apart.

its not so much racism
u hear this word in rap music, but does that mean that rappers are racist against themselves?
i dont think they are, but they are using it as a form of swearing
it is this way that im talking about the word being used

I would have kicked you too. Not even for the swearing, but for your reaction to what was a polite request.

And at any rate...their guild, their alliance, their rules.

I hate when people just go "turn on the swear filter!". Its existence does not make using language that's deemed inappropriate by Anet in their game okay. Not to mention the fact that it censors a lot of innocent words - back before I realized I could shut it off, I was surprised to discover it censored 'bite'.
